Conservation does not occur on an island and so
the objective is to undertake a holistic approach that encompasses all the
stakeholders, particularly farmers, school children and local communities.
From the outset the project concentrated on:
A) Identifying through research the problems facing
Painted Dogs.
B) Actively reducing known causes of mortality.
C) Disseminating the information regarding the
problems facing this species.
The estimated population approximately 100 years ago was between 300,000 and
500,000 animals.
Today the estimate is some 3,000
animals.
The Painted Dog has been wiped out,
extirpated,
from 25 of the 39 counties in which it formally resided.
